Guided Herkimer Diamond Pocket Collecting

We offer guided mineral collecting for the serious mineral collector of Herkimer Diamonds. The success of your collecting trip is assured before you even start! Before your arrival we will have removed up to 20 feet of glacial overburden and up to 8-10 feet of limestone bedrock. Upon your arrival the pocket layer, which is about 24 inches thick, will be exposed. To make this possible we have on site at the mine:

  •  three 100,000-pound excavators
  •  a Cat track loader
  •  a Cat bulldozer
  •  a Mack tandem axle dump truck
  •  an air compressor
  •  a rock drill
  •  jackhammers and other related tools

You and your guide will drill the pocket layer until the drill drops into a large cavity. Then a 350 ton hydraulic rock splitter is inserted in the drill hole and the rock cracks as if by magic! These cavities usually range from 1 to 2 1/2 feet or even larger and will contain from approximately 2 dozen or more crystals. Sometimes up to several hundred crystals!

At this point you can start removing the crystals that have been waiting for you for about 450 million years. Your guide will assist you, if you desire, in removing your crystals from the pocket and help you wrap them for your trip home.

Since this is a personalized service, reservations and a $250 deposit are required. The total cost of your once-in-a-lifetime experience is $1500 for the day. (Credit Cards are acceptable for deposit only). Payment in cash or Travelers' checks, USA funds. No personal checks.

Rock collecting, like most thrill sports, has a certain amount of inherent risk and collecting is done at your own risk. We are, however, very safety conscious, and for your own protection, you should wear suitable mining clothes, work shoes, safety glasses, ear protectors, and gloves.
